Brexit for Beginners

Now you’ve probably read the title of this article and have already gone into a sleep coma. To be honest, I don’t blame you. I can not explain to you how many times I have heard the word ‘Brexit’ in the past year. You’d think that because I hear it so frequently, it's become part of my day to day vocabulary. However, I strongly oppose that idea. In fact, the word ‘Brexit’ has now become a pet hate of mine, and probably yours as well. Similarly in the way that most of us cannot stand it when people cough without covering their mouths, in fact, 49 per cent of us that feel that way. Plus we shouldn’t forget the slow internet connections that make our blood boil. So it’s almost safe to say, that Brexit has become the new nations pet hate.

So you’re now probably wondering why I have written an article on Brexit, given that I despise it so much. Well, I think one of the reasons why I cannot stand it, is because I simply don’t understand what the word means. Given that, this article may well help me understand what it means, and might even allow you to come to terms with the word as well.

Right, where do I start, Brexit in the simplest terms means Britain’s possible exit from the EU, and if you don’t know what the EU is, then I’m seriously concerned? For those who of you who don’t (you know who you are) the EU is an acronym for the European Union. The European Union is an economic and political union that involves 28 countries. It was set up after World War II with the aim to create better relations and cooperation between its members. The idea was that countries who traded with each other were less likely to go to war. Some of the EU’s members include Austria, France, the United Kingdom and Slovakia.

So what’s in it for us? Why should stay in the EU? Well, there are some who are pro- EU, meaning they believe that Britain is stronger if it stayed in the European Union. Thanks to its single market, trading between the members is made much easier and the influx of immigrants helps to boost the economy. Those who choose to remain believe that our place within the EU provides us with security, and think that if we were to leave it would come with many disastrous consequences. Such as the downfall of the UK’s precious status.

On the other hand, there are some people out there who are Pro-Brexit campaigners. Now these people, think Britain would benefit more if we left the EU as we would no longer be contributing to the EU budget of a staggering thirteen billion pounds. Pro-Brexiters simply believe that by leaving the EU, a tremendous amount of money can be saved, which can be spent on other more important issues that the UK is facing. Such as improving the NHS, for example. So, if you think about it Pro-Brexiters are the new and improved Gregg Wallace and Chris Bavin. But, Instead of helping families across the UK eat well for less. Pro-Brexit campaigners are actually helping the UK save money altogether.

There you have it, the word ‘Brexit’ explained as simply as possible. Congratulations if you stuck with this article and read all the way to the end. I’m Impressed. Hopefully, all this has helped your active mind come to terms with what Brexit means. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, maybe even bring up the topic of Brexit in conversation. You’ll be surprised by how smart it will make you sound. So what do you think? Should we remain or leave?
